Typojanchi 2019: 6th International Typography Biennale

On Plants is a multisensory installation that reimagines language through the interplay of light, sound, and typography. Letters circulate between spaces and non-spaces, forming a continuous landscape that invites viewers to engage in a visual stroll. The installation includes two parts: Type Forest and Variable Type Show. Type Forest brings together nine writing systems—Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic, Thai, Hebrew, Devanagari, Chinese, Kana, and Hangeul—into a typographic environment where scripts coexist beyond cultural boundaries. Variable Type Show presents a motion-graphic film made with adjustable variable fonts, offering a visual and auditory experience to viewers seated on bean bags within the space.

Founded in 2019, PLANE AND VERTICAL is a design studio and publisher based in Seoul. We have worked with a wide range of materials and technologies – from flat to spatial, from form to context.
We have a deep interest in addressing and responding to the issues of our time through design, publishing, and other creative practices. Our work focuses on identifying and capturing the various potentials of visual language around the intersection of culture, industry, and art. Our practice aims to amplify oppressed voices and reveal overlooked phenomena in our society.

PLANE AND VERTICAL’s secondary brand, Soft Hard is an experimental, multilingual publication that serves as both a newsletter and a creative playground for cultural workers. Each issue invites a wide range of professionals—designers, architects, artists, curators, writers, and independent publishers, among others—from diverse cultural backgrounds. The publication features a loose and non-linear structure, along with a quick turnaround time, in an effort to remain fresh and relevant to our constantly evolving interests and circumstances.
Founded and published by Yuseon Park and Immanuel Yang of PLANE AND VERTICAL. Soft Hard will soon be launching a new form of platform.

Inspired by Marshall McLuhan’s “Galaxy Gutenberg”(1962), ARITA was born as the ARITA Galaxy, consisting of 3 languages, 4 fonts, and 19 type families. The inner spaces(known as “counters”), which are elements that reveal the characteristics of the characters, were deconstructed and reinterpreted to be implemented in Amore Seongsu and mobile screens. The lethargic galaxy of Windows is amplified into a new dimension on mobile screens, offering a unique text-reading experience. The meticulously overlapped ARITA fonts resemble siblings, with similar expressions yet each peculiar in its own way.

마샬 매클루언의 구텐베르크 은하계(1962)에서 영감을 받아, 총 3개의 언어, 4가지 글꼴, 18종의 글자 가족으로 이뤄져 있는 아리따를 아리따 은하계로 탄생시켰다. 글자의 표정을 보여주는 요소인 글꼴의 속공간(Counter)을 분해하고 재해석하여 아모레성수와 모바일 스크린에 구현했다. 윈도의 나른한 은하계는 모바일 스크린에서 새로운 차원으로 증폭되어 문자를 읽어내는 경험으로 대체된다.
